Added almost 50 more short codes to the directory

I haven't blogged here about new short codes for a long time. Since then, we have added about 50 more short codes to our unofficial directory. So right now we have 448 short codes in the directory.

The "official" directory at www.usshortcodes.com has 355 short codes in their directory. There are too many new codes in the directory to say something about each one. If you had signed up for the newsletter, you would have been emailed the basics on all of them. All 448 are at www.usshortcodeswhois.com.

I suppose I could say something about one of the more interesting additions to the directory. Most of the new codes I added because they were in the "official" directory. However, there was one that I was notified by someone who thinks that they were spammed. The code is 32339 and it is a vanity code that spells DADDY. I received a notice to my WHOIS directory that a person (phone number not provided) doesn't think that they signed up for it, but they received a text message from DADDY. As I do, I texted HELP to 32339 and the reply message directed me to http://www.godaddy.com/mobilesupport.

At this godaddy page, it tells me that "Currently, we are allowing subscriptions to the GoDaddy.com Alerts service through a special promotional offer. You must have the correct keyword to subscribe. If you received the Danica Patrick trading card during the Indianapolis 500, check it for the keyword. Or, you can visit the Hot Spot page on Godaddy.com to locate the keyword under the Danica Patrick section. Then, simply text the keyword to DADDY (32339) to receive your Danica Patrick wallpaper and a subscription to GoDaddy.com Alerts."

So why is Godaddy only promoting a Danica Patrick wallpaper? Don't the other drivers look good in swimming suits....maybe not.

Added 100 short codes to the directory

I haven't blogged here about new short codes for a long time. Since then, we have added 100 short codes to our unofficial directory. So right now we have 399 short codes in the directory.

I created this site in 2005 to improve transparency in the ownership of US short codes because, back in the day, you could not find this information at the official 'registry' of US short codes www.usshortcodes.com. Does this seem odd to you. Rivals.com offers sports text message alerts through short code 600600, but according to the FAQ, "You may receive Text Alerts on one team only." Five New Codes and a Complaint

Since mid-January, we have added five more short codes to the directory. Should I apologize again for not making the updates that I promised I would. Remember...I said that I had texted HELP to the codes that have been in the directory for a long time and several codes don't return a reply message in response to 'help' anymore or the short code use or owner has changed.

Well....I don't feel like apologizing. In fact, I want to bring up something else. I created the Who Is Directory to help people find short code owners because there is a lack of transparency in the common short code business. I get 4 or 5 complaints every week from consumers who complain to me that they were spammed with standard rate or premium rate messages. I don't know if they opted in or not, but that's actually not the point. The point is the level of customer service is extremely poor and consumers are being shuttled between carriers' customer service and short code providers' customer service. And many think that I can help them get a refund or stop messages coming to their phones. If they give me an email address to reply, I try and help them, but many don't, so I hear the complaint directed at me and I can't even respond to tell them it's not me. As an industry, what can we do to make this whole process transparent and avoid lawsuits and regulation?

Mobile Shopping Mall Search - Great Concept, So-so Execution - 632729 (NEARBY)

When I first read the press release, I immediately thought that this was a very cool approach to location based search. "December 11, 2006 - NearbyNow, Inc. today announced the availability of its new mobile search service that allows consumers to find any product, brand or sale in a shopping mall simply by sending a text message. By typing their request into their mobile phone, consumers can easily find the nearest store that sells “skinny jeans“ or “men’s shoes on sale“. This service makes the promise of location-based mobile advertising a reality just in time for the holidays, and provides retailers a way to reach out to nearby shoppers who are looking specifically for items they offer. But then I learned that this started as a online shopping mall search that had moved online. So I compared the online to the mobile. I texted 'VF' to tell them where I am ; then I texted 'jeans'. I got back a message telling me about one special at one store: PacSun. Online I entered 'jeans' in the search box on the http://westfield.com/valleyfair/ website and was told that there are dozens of stores selling jeans in the mall. I'm not surprised as this mall has three hundred and eighty-two stores (382).

So what's the conclusion, it is a very cool concept but I don't agree that it "makes the promise of location-based mobile advertising a reality." I think it needs a lot more behavioral intelligence than it showed me. Or maybe, they should redefine it as "FIND A SALE THAT WE WANT TO TELL YOU ABOUT AT THE MALL YOU ARE IN." I could imagine this concept some day turning into areality, but it's not nearby yet.

I use Googl sms search a lot to look up business numbers when I am on the road. I use 4info also sometimes, but I think of google first usually. It is simple, I just text 'pizza.fairfax.va' to 46645 which spells 'GOOGL' and get the right results, usually. But did you know that this is a mispelling. In fact, Google is not a five letter word, it is a six letter word, spelled with an 'e' at the end. I think that the only difference between 46645 and 466453 is the '3' at the end....I mean the 'e' at the end.

When Limbo first started the reverse auction thing, I thought it was really cool. I tried it a few times when it was standard rate. Now, it's premium, so I don't do it anymore. But, still, even the name LIMBO (is cool when you win by having the lowest unique bid. So, now there is MYIA. Their website is http://www.myia.com/ and their short code is 72777 - but what does MYIA stand for? It is "My Instant Interaction." Well, ok, whatever. The concept appears to be same as LIMBO. MYIA is a subsidiary of Crossroad Mobile. Again, the website: "So how does MY Instant Auction work? Well it's like an auction and a game of skill rolled into one. In a normal auction the highest bidder normally wins. But, with MYIA, it's the LOWEST Unique Bid that Wins." And it's $1.99 per entry.

Of course, there must be a non-premium sms method to enter. It's the law, I think. So, in the fine print, it says:

Hold the phone, entries must be received by January 2, 2006. Something looks wrong. Any one care to investigate. I think Limbo is more upfront and honest about their alternate entry method by phone.

On http://www.gotvnetworks.com, I read that "GoTV Networks is the first made-for-mobile television network and studio group that is changing the way people use their wireless." So, what does Mobile TV have to do with a short code. Well, a month ago, someone asked me who owns 46464. At the time, I texted 'help', then 'go' as instructed in the help response. The next message said it was from GoTV. So I think this is owned by GoTV (www.gotvnetworks.com). Though there is no mention on the site about a short code. And today, it doesn't say GoTV in the message response. It does ask me trivia questions...and I seem to get them mostly wrong.

Unwired Appeal Informs Us of Missing Codes

Someone, I assume from Unwired Appeal, informed us that there were at least four codes missing. They were 36263, 37890, 42349, and 74347. They didn't say what the first two do, but 42349 was described as a "Mobile multimedia delivery and billing platform" and 74347 was described as "Progressive Insurance alerts." I added the first two no questions asked although I only got a vague response from 37890 by texting 'HELP' and no response at all from 36263.

I added 74347 but not under Unwired Appeal. They may be the "service provider" for Progressive but I think of this one as a Progressive code. See press release where there is no mention of UA: http://newsroom.progressive.com/progressive_insurance_news/2006/August/Mobile_alerts.aspx

UA also said that 57879 belongs to them. Well, there is no response to 'HELP" so I haven't added this one. The other reason I didn't add it is because of an article I read last month (http://www.denverpost.com/headlines/ci_4719289) that said the code will be introduced by "Denver-based Connectme360... targeting the hotel industry with its code 5STRZ (57879). Essentially, the company's service will allow hotel customers to receive information about the city they are visiting, such as the nearest sushi restaurant, by sending a message to 5STRZ. The company hopes to launch the service in the coming weeks, said chief executive Brian Hayashi."
Yes, it is all very confusing. I'm sure it will get straightened out in the end.

More Mobile Marketing Services - 46604, 72008, and 23000

One is new (72008) and one is old (46604), but both have been added in the last month to the directory. Then there's 23000 - I don't know if its new or old.

I believe 46604 from iphs! (owned by Omnicom Group) has been around for a while, although it is new to the directory. This service is branded EZTXTMSG and you will see the following description at http://www.eztxtmsg.com/html/what_is_eztxtmsg/: "eztxtmsg.com is a turnkey, web-based service that simplifies management of mobile marketing campaigns. It is an easy to use online service that provides you with the right tools to conduct marketing campaigns through SMS and group text messaging." The bulk SMS rates are decent, not the best I've seen, but decent. But a keyword will add a $100 per month - definitely not the best pricing. Still, it comes from a good brand. I'd tell you who I think has a better deal... but I don't want to be accused of favoritism.

I believe 72008 from Unique Advertising Strategies is new to the directory and to the nation. The website at http://www.uniqueadvertisingstrategies.com/ said it was introduced in November 2006. Though to be honest, I don't know what is so unique about this service. And the pricing comparison at http://www.uniqueadvertisingstrategies.com/costcomparison.php confused me, as it compares print advertising, email marketing, and direct mail, but doesn't tell me how what are the mobile marketing costs if you go with these unique people. Well, the demo on the site is alright.

Red Fish Media tells us that they are "able to offer a One-Stop-Shop' to corporations whose strategy is to increasingly target the cell phone and mobile communications consumer." I also read on http://www.redfishmedia.com/ that Red Fish Media, LLC was established in 2004 as a specialist mobile communications content provider and strategic consultancy. Ok, so it's old. New to the WhoIs directory though.

Some one asked me if 4NEWS was available. I went to http://www.usshortcodes.com/ and found it was taken. Of course, they don't tell you by who. So, I texted 'HELP' to 46397 and the Mobile Terminated message told me to email customerservice@thelsn.com for help. That was not help. So, I googled 'customerservice@thelsn.com' and found one and only match of http://ww2.ajcmobile.com/wireless/signup.cfm?sid=1001&pageid=terms. So, now we know. It's the Atlanta Journal Constitution sending text alerts. But although these are standard rate messages, you can't sign up without a password. I didn't resolve this further but my guess is that you need to pay by alternate means. And I thought Cingular didn't allow that? Ok, I am just spreading rumours now.

I like to note on the US Short Codes Whois directory who the owner of a shortcode is. But the owner doesn't always make it so easy. 67337 sells all manner of premium content, from horoscope alerts to games to riske wallpapers. The wallpaper is not porn because the carriers don't allow that, but the bikinis are still quite small. In the T&Cs, it refers to MyCoolmobile.com, but it never tells you who the actual company is. Why is that? Who has somthing to hide? The website domain registry is also private.

It has been many months since I updated the site a week ago. I would blame it on the World Cup but that was just the tripwire I fell over. I put a dollar in a machine and then opened up my 20 oz. bottle of Coke. The label told me of their rewards program and told me to go online or text the code under the bottle cap. Cool! According to Business Week, GQ Magazine is getting into text messaging. "The service, BusinessWeek Online has learned, will be operated in conjunction with m-Qube, a Watertown (Mass.)-based company that has created an infrastructure for distributing music and other media to cell phones" "We think it's going to be such a powerful medium," says GQ marketing director Scott Carliss"

So, are you thinking editorial content. Actually, Business Week reports that "Once enrolled, GQ Mobile users will start to receive original content developed for the digital mobile service. It may include information about events, private sales, shopping nights, and giveaways. The service will differ from the mobile magazines, or mobizines, that Condé Nast and others are rolling out in Britain, which are focused more on snippets of editorial content and pictures. "This is a business opportunity. It isn't about editorial," Carliss says."

I would call this "co-branded mobile marketing."

This must be the year of mobile marketing, or mobile something. Now dogs are using SMS. How do they do that you ask? On http://globalpetfinder.com/membernews/found.html, you will read that "Using this proprietary feature allows you to get your pets position on demand simply by dialing F-O-U-N-D from your cell phone." You didn't actually think that the dogs were doing the texting.

I keep Wizard, my beagle, in the yard by using an Invisible Fence. He rarely strays because getting shocked is no fun. Occassionaly, he gets out because the battery is , there is a hot dog (I was going to say bitch, but I don't want to get characterized as vulgar, as well as spam) on the outside, or something.

For $349.99, I will always no where he is, assuming battery isn't , collar hasn't been removed, or he is out of coverage (aka a spot). As I already have the Invisible Fence, I won't get it, but still this is very cool.
