Go GOP Go, 2006 - 46706 (GOP06)

The Republican National Committee is making use of text updates for the upcoming election. The short code is a vanity code of GOP06. There is also a web optin at http://www.gop.com/secure/mobilesplash.aspx.

The company delivering the service is Mobile Accord. The reply to help tells you help is at www.mahlp.cc.

I don't want to get into politics. So.......NO COMMENT.

From Latino 96.3 to dload of Australia - 63389

Detective work led me from Latino 96.3 (http://www.latino963.com/cellphone.html) to DLOAD Pty, Ltd (http://www.dload.us/). I texted help to 63389 and and was told that support is through radio@dload.us

From their About Us page: "dload was founded in 1998 to commercialise research and development in real time intelligent automated messaging over single and multiple channels. Using instant communication technologies and software development, dload help organisations and their related parties to better understand and profit from their relationships."

I think the product used at Latino 96.3 is: "Demon DJ is an interactive entertainment software solution for matching requests and displaying incoming messages (MMS/SMS/Email), pictures and graphs on an attached video screen (such as an outdoor screen or plasma TV). With comprehensive screen management, reporting and basic profiling, DJ is perfect in the mobile environment for festivals, sports grounds, clubs, pubs, DJ's and promotional agencies. "

Used by 69690

I feel so used....Check out http://www.69690.com/CS2/min_questions.htm and you see the following Q&A:

"Question: Consumer was referred to us by his carrier, but his cell number is not in our system.
Answer: The shortcode (5 digit number) should appear on his monthly bill. If it does, then you can figure out the correct company using this website. If you cannot find the shortcode on usshortcodes, then just refer him back to his carrier."

I found this page by googling, but there is no link from the main page. Maybe this is for internal use?

LiveLocal Video Won't Work on My Nokia 6230 but...Weathernews Direct SMS will

I can't remember how I find this. What I mean is I know the website, http://wni.livelocal.tv, but I can't remember what short code I responded to initially.

From http://wni.livelocal.tv:

"Weathernews Direct is a mobile text messaging service where SMS text messages from WNI and the National Weather Service are sent directly to your cell phone with daily weather forecasts, information and special reports.
For only $1.99 per month, Weathernews Direct gives you the convenience of having simple text weather information sent to your phone at 7:00 a.m. your local time each day. Whether you are on the go, or you simply want to know what the weather is going to be like without having to search for it, Weathernews Direct gives you all the convenience of reliable weather forecasting at your fingertips!"

9/11 Workers: Text to 63411

I have seen the use of this shortcode change a few times. First is was an author, then Orbitz, but now it's the "Business and Labor Coalition of NY." See their website at http://www.balconynewyork.com/.

I texted 'help' to 63411 and received a text message and an automated recording to my cellphone.

CitiSearch (IAC/InterActiveCorp) - CS411 (27411)

IAC through CitiSearch provides mobile search.

From the website (http://www.citysearch.com/sms_search_cs411): "CS411 enables you to send queries as text messages over your mobile phone..." and get "...local business listings."

I don't know where they promote the service. I wouldn't have known about it if someone had not added it through the form on the USShortCodesWhois site.

I texted 'pizza.22031' and got four messages in response. Each one with a listing and all saying "Sponsored by Bertolli" at the bottom of the message, though not a single listing was for Bertolli. So I google Bertolli and found that they are a food company. Ok, so what's the point of the sponsorship.

Traffic alerts - 87232 (TRAFC)

Traffic.com, Inc brings us "my traffic.com phone alerts - gives drivers updates by phone when there are delays along specific route(s) at exactly the time(s) requested by the drivers."

After a few minutes searching the website, I found the sms faq. http://www.traffic.com/sms_faq.html

I then texted 'dc'. I got a message back promptly. The text message was

"Brought to you by Lexus.

ACDNT-
JMD - 495i
SLW - 66e, 66w, BWPn

Details at 8666987232 or traffic.com"

Not very useful sitting at my desk testing the code out but not planning on driving right now. I wonder if I will remember this before I head out next?

DayMob from BigRadical Inc - 82475

Ad supported business model in mobile. In beta. The "How it Works" is at www.daymob.com. The company is at www.bigradical.com.

They "founded Daymob.com to help you to discover cool new content and services for your phone and stop paying excessive monthly fees. After signing up, you can download a free ringtone and wallpaper, and easily access Mobile Web content, such as jokes, horoscopes or gaming news."

They " send you carefully selected messages from our sponsors, including product samples, discount coupons, sweepstakes, invitations and offers on the latest games for your mobile. You will get maximum 3 messages per week, currently not even that."

It seemed a bit much when they say "Daymob.com is an ad-sponsored service, just like Myspace, Yahoo! and Google", but I suppose that they were just trying to make sure we knew that they were like Myspace, Yahoo, and Google.

Who owns 67337?

I like to note on the US Short Codes Whois directory who the owner of a shortcode is. But the owner doesn't always make it so easy. 67337 sells all manner of premium content, from horoscope alerts to games to riske wallpapers. The wallpaper is not porn because the carriers don't allow that, but the bikinis are still quite small. In the T&Cs, it refers to MyCoolmobile.com, but it never tells you who the actual company is. Why is that? Who has somthing to hide? The website domain registry is also private.

Chat - 69690

Chat, chat, chat. Pay, pay, pay.

Nothing new about chat. But a good short code for it. Even the website name seems appropriate: www.69690.com.

College TV Sports - The First Six Digit Short Code - 462788 (GOCSTV)

Score alerts, ringtones, and wallpapers. Nothing revolutionary here. But hold on....This SHORT code is six digits. We were told that they (six digit short codes) were coming and here is the first one to be added to the US Short Codes Whois directory.

Compare Prices on New & Used Textbooks - 63260

Too many short codes added to comment on all. So, I will comment on just one.

I have now idea how much use this service is getting, but it is targeted at the right demographic....for sure.

CampusBooks Inc brings us CampusBooks Mobile Book Search™. The service allows you to compare book prices anywhere, anytime, on the go. CampusBooks Mobile is a free service.

1) Text your book ISBN number to 63260.
2) They text you back the 3 lowest prices on CampusBooks (within 30 seconds).
3) To buy your books, go their website http://www.campusbooks.com/mobile and enter your phone number.

Come to think of it, I am not sure I like step 3. If I have to buy it from the website, why not just search there. Hmmm?

I APOLOGIZE

The basic message of this post is I APOLOGIZE.

It has been many months since I updated the site a week ago. I would blame it on the World Cup but that was just the tripwire I fell over. I was watching the games and checking out the new short code services introduced in the US, including T-mobile Man of the Match. I should have posted updates but I just kept watching. By the time Italy won, I was falling further and further behind.

A few complained, more signed up to get the non-existant newsletter, and then David Snyder came to the rescue. He offered his time and now I am caught up. And now we have dozens more short codes in the directoy. We have a total of 235.

I can't tell you all the codes added and deleted, I am just glad that we are caught up. I will promise to try and not let it happen again.
